Community - We are all in it

When people come to the Neighbourhood House for the first time, we  hear them say they thought the house was just for a certain type of person.

"I thought only retired people were able to use the Neighbourhood House"

"Don't you have to have a Healthcare card?"

"Is this just for people with Disabilities?"

"Don't you have to be ......?"

A loud and resounding NO to all the above.

We have people at the Neighbourhood House of all occupations, lifestyles, religions, political persuasions, nationalities, abilities, ages and any other box you would like to tick. That's what I love about Neighbourhood Houses, everyone is welcome.

Spread the word..... we're all included.

Hands On Learning Update

The students from Traralgon Secondary College's Hands On Learning group have continued to improve our garden. Here are the latest photos from the past few weeks:

We put up a gate:

and made a mural

Now the rain is watering the garden. There is more work to be done, but it is wonderful to see the weekly improvement of our outdoor area and the students enthusiasm for helping is great to see.

ANHLC Conference 2013

Much of the feedback from the Conference has been posted on the LV Community Shed blog or Facebook or the LV Community Shed twitter feed. I don't like to repeat it all. The theme of the conference was 'Power Houses' and it certainly lived up to it. There was an amazing presentation about the statistics from Neighbourhood Houses and I will share that with you once I convert the files to load online. It's safe to say that this sector performs well on limited resources. I really appreciated the opportunity to hear about the wonderful things happening in communities around Victoria. If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or at the house. I would like to share the clips from our last session titled: Inspiration.

The following amazing clips were shared:

Caine's Arcade... a beautiful story about imagination and community
Caine's Arcade from Nirvan Mullick on Vimeo.

An amazing story about creating peace...
Susan Boyle's Audition for anyone who hasn't seen it or wants to revisit.....

The wholehearted Brene Brown shared her research into living wholeheartedly, And demonstrating the power of Vulnerability was Alice Fredenham And because we had a few minutes left, a member of our group shared this amazing audition... And full of inspiration, we embarked on the long trip home. It was an amazing conference and I noticed so much change since my last one in 1999 or 2000. The world has changed a lot since then and Neighbourhood Houses have responded.

Winners

We are happy to announce that TNLH is a Finalist in the Latrobe City Telstra People's Choice Awards in 2 categories for showing 'Excellence in Customer Service' and 'Good Access is Good Business'. Thank you to everyone who has voted for us.

We drew the Mothers Day Raffle last week at the Digital Shed on Friday.Lavalla students Steph and Mikayla drew the winning tickets. Shelley Matthews won first place and Archie Van Berkel won the 2nd prize.

Speaking of Archie, the students from Traralgon College learnt a lot last time they visited on the 9th May. Many of our house users donated plants and cuttings. Bunnings have also helped with the project donating paint.

This week students had to do NAPLAN tests so the garden has been treated to rain and sunshine.

YOU can help out by donating some seeds or paint to this project. We have workers and we want a herb and vege garden to use in our cooking classes. The students have some great artwork planned for the walls..... just wait and see.

Please see Jenny, Julie, Linda or Joh at the House
