Community - We are all in it

When people come to the Neighbourhood House for the first time, we  hear them say they thought the house was just for a certain type of person.

"I thought only retired people were able to use the Neighbourhood House"

"Don't you have to have a Healthcare card?"

"Is this just for people with Disabilities?"

"Don't you have to be ......?"

A loud and resounding NO to all the above.

We have people at the Neighbourhood House of all occupations, lifestyles, religions, political persuasions, nationalities, abilities, ages and any other box you would like to tick. That's what I love about Neighbourhood Houses, everyone is welcome.

Spread the word..... we're all included.

Winners

We are happy to announce that TNLH is a Finalist in the Latrobe City Telstra People's Choice Awards in 2 categories for showing 'Excellence in Customer Service' and 'Good Access is Good Business'. Thank you to everyone who has voted for us.

We drew the Mothers Day Raffle last week at the Digital Shed on Friday.Lavalla students Steph and Mikayla drew the winning tickets. Shelley Matthews won first place and Archie Van Berkel won the 2nd prize.

Speaking of Archie, the students from Traralgon College learnt a lot last time they visited on the 9th May. Many of our house users donated plants and cuttings. Bunnings have also helped with the project donating paint.

This week students had to do NAPLAN tests so the garden has been treated to rain and sunshine.

Men's Shed Update

This week I've been checking out the websites of men's shed's around Victoria. I got the list here. There are quite a few as you will see if you check out that list.

One of the things I've noticed is how passionate people are about men's sheds. Most of the people I have spoken to are very enthusiastic and excited to see a new one starting in our town.

It's only one week until the Information Session so I hope you all have it marked in your calendar. It's on at 7pm, at the Neighbourhood House on Thursday 14th March. We hope to set up a working party to get things moving.

Men's Shed Update

This week I've visited the existing Men's Shed in Whittakers Road. They do a variety of woodwork activities and model building. We expect we will do something different at our Men's Shed and will work with the existing Traralgon Men's Shed so there will be more choice for everyone.

I've talked to many wonderful people. Some of the ideas are:

Recycling.... bikes.... furniture...

Metal work

Restoring Cars/ Mechanical repairs / Car Maintenance

Digital Projects - Digital storytelling,

I went to a Crowdfunding Information session last night ran by Pozible. When we have our plan in place it could be a great way to raise funds and awareness of our activities.

I'm sure there are plenty more great ideas out there and I hope you have marked the 14th March on your calendar to come along and share them.

If you can't make it for some reason, please call me with contact information and ideas so we can keep you in the loop.

Men's Shed News

The Traralgon Neighbourhood House Men's Shed has been given the thumbs up!! We are forming a Committee of Management of interested people to get this place for men to learn and spend time together a reality.

It's an exciting opportunity to be a part of forming a community resource!

An information session will be held on Thursday, March 14th at the Traralgon Neighbourhood Learning House at 7pm. Please help us to spread the word.

Contact Joh 0419 568 772, for further information.

I will be updating on the progress and reminding you about this because we want all the men in Traralgon to know about it and have the opportunity to have their say about what they want in their shed.
